OUR STORY

Brian Barth and Samira Kiani had a dream: a place to bring people together from the communities they are part of across the Bay Area. Brian, a gardener, designer and writer, recently published a book about the Bay Area's unhoused communities. Samira, a doctor, cell therapy researcher and entrepreneur, is originally from Iran. They have diverse interests and are drawn to diverse people: Wealthy. Poor. Conservative. Progressive. Straight. Gay. American-born. Immigrant. Everyone has an important story to tell - the dream behind Union Island is to cultivate a space for the exchange of ideas and inspiration, and to spark dialogue across our differences.

Union Island began as a mythological domain inside the heads of two dreamers. One day, an opportunity arose to give it a physical form: a century-old wooden yacht. Brian and Samira knew nothing about boats, but decided to dive in. They renamed her Asesu after an African goddess of navigation. The journey to Union Island began. In addition to daily food offerings, Brian and Samira will host monthly themed gatherings -- a book club, speakeasy night, "depolarization dialogues," live music and The Secret 6, a carefully curated group of strangers who meet for an epic dinner party and deep conversation on a socially-important theme.

THE BOAT

Asesu is a Stephens Brothers cabin cruiser, built in Stockton, CA in 1929. Click here to learn all about its century of life.
